Former Dorm RA charged in battery at UF

https://www.gainesville.com/news/20190911/former-dorm-ra-charged-in-battery-at-uf

a 21 year old RA was arrested when he tried to "sexually batter her" in August. The University prepared a statement since it was their dorm that this happened at and was their decision to make this man an RA, UF stated that they place the "highest priority on the safety of its students". This student is no longer allowed on campus.

The problem in this story is that there is a system that RA's have to go through in order to become RA of dorms. This system obviously did not see that this man could be a potential issue when being an RA of this dorm and even abuse his power and take advantage of someone within the dorm. This problem is directed towards UF, it is their responsibility to provide safety within the school and if their system is allowing people like this man to pass through and have the authority that he has is a problem that the school needs to fix.

After Dorian, Bahamas tackles massive clean-up

https://www.gainesville.com/news/20190912/after-dorian-bahamas-tackles-massive-clean-up

After Hurricane Dorian destroyed the Bahamas people are beginning to have hope again for all the things that will eventually be rebuilt. In the article Pastor Jeremiah shares his story about how he built a church 22 years ago and it was destroyed but now he is going to rebuild it. He states that it will "be a slow process" but people are working on it and the Bahamas will be restored.

The problem is that the Bahamas were destroyed during this hurricane and it is going to cost a lot to repair the damages. Another problem is that a lot of peoples hopes are crushed because their homes and memories were destroyed as well. The citizens of the Bahamas are those who have this problem because they are the ones who were directly involved with this hurricane and unfortunately Dorian stayed over the Bahamas while it was at its peak of a storm.

California Adopts Bill, Helping Homeowners Go Solar.

This articles discusses how some residents in specific zip codes in California receive more sunlight than most which is why the state government will provide solar panels that will cut their electrical bill tremendously. The article states that solar panels are "70% cheaper today than they were a couple of years ago" which means that switching to solar panel is not only going to be less expensive than it use to be but it will also reduce overall cost of maintaining a home.

The problem is that we know how to make electricity more environmentally friendly and less costly but we have never implemented into the real words which is what this bill is solving. Who this problem is effecting is all Americans. If this bill solves this problem of costly electricity then the United States could be the first Solar powered country which could help the environment.

Fort Myers police captain faced with prostitution, perjury charges will retire

Rodriguez a 46 year old police officer in Fort Myers sends in his resignation letter conveniently on the same day a warrant for his arrest was issued. He was caught on video at a prostitution massage parlor in 2013. He was arrested on Tuesday and paid $4,000 for bail. The officer was working undercover trying to pursue prostitutes and was caught on camera with the women he was trying to arrest. Rodriguez next court date is October 14th.

The problem presented in this story was that Rodriguez was caught on camera with prostitutes which led to his warrant for arrest. Who this problem is effecting is Officer Rodriguez and his family because he is forced to lose his job and maybe even be sentenced to jail time. Another problem that Rodriguez is facing is that if he is arrested because of what he has done he does not receive his pension which he has been working towards for over thirty years. This problem might be resolved by Rodriguez taking a plea deal where he serves for his misdemeanors and receives his pension as well.

House passes bill to permanently ban drilling off Florida's Gulf Coast

The U.S House of Representatives voted to permanently ban offshore drilling off the coast of Florida's Gulf. In 2017 President Trump signed an executive order in 2017 to start a five year program that opens drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. This bill was passed so that the mistake in 2010 with the BP oil spill will not happen again in the Gulf of Mexico.

The problem is that the President wanted to get oil drilling to start back up in the Gulf of Mexico which could potential end up like the 2010 BP oil spill. The U.S House of Representatives voted to ban this offshore drilling so that our environment stays healthy and oil free. Although this is a good thing it still is a problem for America because it means that we need to import our oil which then puts us more and more in debt.

  1. Hi Alex,

I certainly took interest in some of the articles you posted. The point of the assignment was to locate articles that show a problem which we (the entrepreneur) could potential resolve through the creation of a product, service or the like. For the Bahamas article specifically, there are many companies or individuals who would read that and then decide to travel to the Bahamas to make a profit by helping to rebuild or what not. Good selection on your articles.

  2. Hey Alex,

I took a lot of interest in the Fort Myers Police captain story specifically as I think it's ironic (and a bit embarrassing), that someone who is supposed to be a star example of integrity and law abidance, was found in a massage parlor partaking in less than repeatable activities. And you brought up a great point that he won't receive his pension if he doesn't play his cards right. I used to live very close to Fort Myers so this comes as a shock to me! Great writing.

  3. Hi Alex,

Wow, what a crazy story about the UF former dorm RA! That’s really scary and disturbing UF doesn’t have an in-depth system to check their RA’s before hiring them. It is the responsibility of the school to make sure their students are protected, especially when they are living on-campus in dorms. I really hope UF fixes this system ASAP!
