Who: College students that have spent their time and money going through college in order to receive a better education. Although they are receiving a better education in order to get a better future job, the jobs are not always guaranteed and many ask for additional years of experience for an entry level job.

What: College is all about narrowing your focus down to major in a specific subject. Once you have all this knowledge on that specific subject and find a job that is hiring for that subject they then ask for more experience even if you have prior knowledge about it. Shouldn't it be the job of the college to provide you with the 'experience' in order to get a job out of college rather than just providing the knowledge. That is what this opportunity is for, it is to provide those years of experience to undergraduates so that you can apply and be accepted to interviews straight out of college.

Why: The cause of this opportunity is because students need to spend most of them time and money for college. If students get jobs within college it is most likely a job that is not specific for their major for example, waiter/waitress, busboy, cashier, these jobs do not give the right experience for their major.

Inside Barrier:

Who- College students who attend college and do not get experience in jobs within their specific major.

What is the need- A solution to how college students could gain experience easier while attending college.

Why the need exist- Jobs that want to hire for specific positions usually ask for multiple years of experience which is difficult to gain experience while attending school.

Outside Barrier:

Who is not- People who are not college students and do not look for applying to a job that requires experience.

What the need is not- the need is not more jobs near colleges it is opportunity specifically for junior and seniors in a major that would provide 2 years of experience for college students.

Alternative explanation- College students take a few years before attending college to gain experience.

1. My first interview was a college student who just came out of career fair. I asked him what most of the companies were asking to which he responded with "they asked if I had any experience in the internship/job I was asking about". He said that it his major was already giving him enough trouble and to add a job that would give him the correct work experience would overload his schedule.

2. This interviewer was a graduate student that planned on working right after college but once graduated and taken a year off she realized it was more difficult than she thought to get a job so she went back to school to get her masters in order to seem more educated and maybe get a job after graduate school. The fact that she thinks that the way to get a job after school is to go through more school should not be the case, the jobs should be wanted her right out of college but instead they ask for experience. She said that most of the jobs were looking for people that were willing to stay at the entry level for at least 2 years before moving up at all. She thought that if she had a masters degree that it would eliminate the need for the 2 year entry level job.

3.   This interview I interview a student within my class that is coming close to the end of his major which results in an internship. He said that the internship that he is going after is very competitive, which is somewhat like all other jobs. If college students are stressed for an internship because it is competitive once they graduate and have to apply to jobs is going to be even more stressful. He stated that school can be stressful and now that he has to worry about jobs as well it is just adding to the stress overall.

4. I interview a friend that is my age and in my classes. I told him the opportunity that I had come up with and he said that it was a good idea. He said that internships are provided by most a lot of the colleges are helpful and that an opportunity like that but for job experience would be something that not only him and I would be interested in more experience.

5. My final internship was my older brother who just graduated college. He said that he had no opportunities to find jobs while in college that would help him gain experience for his major. He said although there were plenty of opportunities for internship the jobs that he applied to did not want internship experience, he said they were specifically looking for years of experience in the field that he was applying for.

  1. Hi Alex,

Ah, yes...The classic problem of not enough experience to be hired for the job function is one that has existed for some time as we know it. We also know that finding an internship can be expensive (they don't pay you) and highly competitive so it is not a simple or relevant solution to the need you are trying to address. I'm interested to see how this idea develops. I also enjoyed how you reached out to a few different kinds of individuals to try and understand a broader based of what needs may be out there regarding this topic - good job!

  2. Hey Alex,

Again I think this is a very prominent problem in today's society and is only growing stronger each year as corporations want more and more from entry level positions. I think you did a pretty good job outlining the opportunity and you did a great breakdown on who sits in the boundary, who sits outside the boundary, and why. I think another good reason why some don't get enough experience in their field is due to the fact that some have to work jobs in order to pay their way through school. I know many people (example: my roommate) who works two jobs and can't afford to go on internships as he'll miss work.
