Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson
What surprised you the most?
It surprised me how much Steve Jobs meditated. I have always heard of the benefits of meditating but could never truly get myself to do it. Also while he was meditating I was surprised that he used drugs in order to meditate because I thought that if you were going to meditate and be one with yourself that drugs would not help.
What about the entrepreneur did you most admire?
What I admire most was how hard of a worker Steve Jobs was. No matter what got in his way whether that be Michael Scoot or the Board of Directors he was always able to perceiver through and continue to strive towards his goal to create his dream.
What about the entrepreneur did you least admire?
The way that he went about talking to people that disagreed with his goal was something that I did not admire. For me when someone gives me feedback about how something is wrong that I do I usually take it on the chin and know that it will help me later on, but sometimes Steve Jobs would get too upset. Jobs would even throw tantrums when things were not going his way which is another thing that is somewhat childish that I do not admire.
Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure?
Yes like almost every entrepreneur Steve Jobs encountered failure. Jobs had to overcome many failures of his programs and to think that his dream was not going to become a success was something that he had to push through in order to get Apple to where it is today. He not only had technical failures or adversity that he had to overcome but he also had some relationship adversities with his family that he was able to overcome in order to become so successful.
What Competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited?
Steve Jobs was able to create new innovative technology that was never seen before like the Ipod and Iphone. These competencies is what made Steve Jobs so successful. It was interesting to see how such a smart mans mind worked. Although he was so attentive to detail and was able to create such a huge successful company he still had flaws like all of us, like how his diet was mainly fruit which was bad but he thought was good for him.
Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you?
Going back to his diet I thought it was confusing that such a smart man let himself only eat fruit because he was so sure that it was good for him. Later on when he was told that it was not good for him and was actually killing him he still did not change it. This was confusing because if I was as smart as this man why would I be so sure about something that I truly are not sure about such as the cancer that he had or the fruit diet.
If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask?
When you were beginning to start up your business and you decided that you were going to need employees which group whether it was friends, family members, or new employees did you first evaluate to be within your company?
I would ask this question because I would want to know about how Jobs felt about allowing family members or friends within his business. I have worked with friends and family members on group projects and sometimes it does not go well because some take it personally and I would like to know how Jobs dealt with that.
For Fun: what do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of hard work? do you share that opinion?
I think what Steve Jobs thought was hard work was being able to make such a complicated device to be simple to every day users. Although people were not going to see the hard work that Jobs put in it this was exactly what his job was to make it do things that will make every day life easier which I believe is hard to do. I think whenever you have something complicated and you need to explain it or make it simple for someone else, I believe that is what hard work looks like because if you truly know something you will be able to transform it into multiple version so that everyone will understand and use it.

Steve Jobs is the first entrepreneur and innovator that I was ever introduced too. When I was younger all I wanted was an Iphone . So because of that Steve Jobs personally inspired me to push through adversity and to never give up. While Steve Jobs was not a perfect person, there is still a reason why he is still one of the most memorable and influential entrepreneurs of all time .
ReplyDeleteHey Alex,
ReplyDeleteI read the book on the wright brothers as I skim through other's posts, I'm seeing a lot of similarities between the brothers who made the first flying machine and the other pioneers in innovation that this world has seen. I see that almost every one sees countless failures before they create a successful product, but instead of giving up, they keep going. They either revise their product or the same thing to different people. This (in addition to their creativity) is what makes them innovators.
Hi Alex,
ReplyDeleteI chose the Steve Jobs biography to do my post on as well. I thought his weird ideologies like the fruit thing was interesting too. After finding out a diet like that wasn’t good for him he still stuck with it which aided his death. It’s almost like he was too prideful to admit he was wrong and change his ways, very sad.
